Explanation of Qur'an 2:191
Translation (Sahih International):
“And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah [persecution] is worse than killing. But do not fight them at al-Masjid al-Haram unless they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.”
🕋 When and Why It Was Revealed
This verse was revealed in Medinah after the Hijrah (Migration) when Muslims had been continuously oppressed by the Quraysh pagans of Makkah. It was a divine command granting permission to defend themselves against years of injustice, persecution, and forced exile.
🧭 Context & Target
The verse refers specifically to the Quraysh polytheists who:
- Persecuted and tortured early Muslims
- Forced them to leave Makkah
- Continued attacks even after Muslims settled in Madinah
It is not a general command against non-Muslims, but a historical directive for self-defense.
🔍 Breakdown of the Verse
📚 Tafsir (Classical Commentary)
- Ibn Kathir: This verse is about self-defense, not aggression. “Fitnah” means religious oppression.
- Al-Qurtubi: Permission was given only after persecution. Sacred spaces are protected unless attacked.
- Al-Jalalayn: Limited to combatants and a state of war. It’s not a general rule for all times.
🕌 Related Hadith
- Sahih Muslim: “Do not kill women, children, or elderly...” – Islam sets strict rules of warfare.
- Sahih Bukhari: “Whoever harms a non-Muslim under protection, I will be his enemy on the Day of Judgment.”
❗ Misunderstood by Some
This verse is often quoted out of context by critics. It is not about general violence. It addresses a specific time of war when Muslims were under threat and needed divine permission to defend themselves.
✅ Conclusion
- This verse was revealed for self-defense in the face of brutal persecution.
- It targets only combatants of Quraysh who oppressed Muslims.
- Islam promotes justice, limits warfare, and protects the innocent.
“Fitnah is worse than killing” means the pain of being forced to abandon your faith is more damaging than war.
Qur’an 2:191 – Tafsir in Hinglish
“Aur tum unko maaro jahan kahin bhi unko pao, aur unko wahan se nikaal do jahan se unhone tumhein nikala. Zulm (fitna) qatl se bhi zyada bura hai. Lekin Masjid-e-Haram ke paas ladayi mat karo jab tak wo tumse wahan ladayi na karein. Agar wo tumse ladayi karein, to tum bhi ladayi karo. Yeh hai kafiron ka anjaam.”
📅 Kab aur Kyun Nazil Hui?
Yeh aayat Madinah mein nazil hui jab Prophet Muhammad ﷺ aur unke sahaba Makkah se hijrat kar chuke the. Is aayat ke zariye Allah ne Musalmanon ko pehli baar self-defense ki ijaazat di.
👥 Kis par nazil hui?
Yeh aayat Quraysh ke un mushrikeen par nazil hui jo Islam ke dushman ban gaye the aur Prophet ﷺ ke khilaf jang kar rahe the. Yeh aam non-Muslim ke liye nahi thi, sirf unke liye jo active enemies the.
– Sahih Bukhari & Muslim
- “Jo kisi aman wale non-Muslim ko takleef de, main uska mukhalif hoon Qayamat ke din.”
🚫 Ghalat Fahmi Ka Jawaab
Kuch log is aayat ko “Islam violent hai” ke liye quote karte hain, lekin asal mein yeh war-time rule hai, self-defense mein. Islam ne 13 saal zulm saha aur aakhri raasta sirf apne aap ko protect karna tha.
✅ Nateeja
- Yeh aayat defensive jihad ke liye hai.
- Islam ne peace and justice ko priority diya hai.
- “Fitna” yaani zulm se ladna zaroori hai jab har rasta band ho jaaye.
Islam har waqt aman chahta hai, lekin jab zulm had se badh jaye to khud ki hifazat bhi farz ban jata hai.
