CONTEXT OF QUR'AN 9:5
Qur'an 9:5 – Verse of the Sword: Translation, Context, and Explanation
🔹 Arabic and English Translation
Arabic:
فَإِذَا انسَلَخَ الأَشْهُرُ الْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُوا الْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ... (Surah At-Tawbah 9:5)
Transliteration:
Fa-itha insalakha al-ashhuru al-hurum faqtuloo almushrikeena haythu wajadtumoohum...
Translation (Sahih International):
“And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, then let them go their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”
🔹 Historical Context of Revelation
This verse was revealed in the 9th year after Hijrah, after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and the Conquest of Makkah. It addresses certain Arab pagan tribes who violated their peace treaties with the Prophet ﷺ and attacked Muslims or allied tribes.
🔹 Who Was This Verse About?
The verse refers specifically to polytheist tribes of Arabia who broke their treaties and posed a threat. It was not directed at peaceful non-Muslims or Christians/Jews (People of the Book).
🔹 Misconceptions and Clarification
This verse is often quoted out of context. It does not promote indiscriminate violence. The surrounding verses (especially 9:4 and 9:6) clearly exempt peaceful non-Muslims and offer protection to those seeking peace.
🔹 Supporting Verses
Qur'an 9:4: Those who did not break their treaty are not to be harmed.
Qur'an 9:6: “And if one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection... then deliver him to his place of safety.”
🔹 Hadith and Tafsir References
- Sahih al-Bukhari: Surah Tawbah was one of the last major revelations. (Vol. 5, Book 59, Hadith 369)
- Tafsir Ibn Kathir: The command applies to those who broke treaties and attacked Muslims.
- Imam al-Tabari: Context-specific ruling, not a universal law.
- Declaration at Hajj: Announced by Ali ibn Abi Talib after revelation of this verse.
🔹 Conclusion
Surah 9:5 was revealed in the context of war, after repeated violations of peace treaties by certain Arab tribes. It is not a general rule against all non-Muslims. The Qur’an emphasizes justice, mercy, and peace for those who are not aggressive or treacherous.
